During the summer months the temperature ranges from 25-30 degrees Celsius. Vernon offers an abundance of trails for mountain bikers of all ages and skill levels. While the South slopes of the surrounding area offer desert like conditions with few trees, the north slopes offer plenty of shade and a completely different riding experience. Several of the more popular trails are BX Creek, the Vernon Hill trails, Kalamalka Lake Park and Eagle Rock. Silver Star Mountain Resort also offers downhill trails and full chairlift services in the summer.
Boating is one of the most popular activities in Vernon as the city is located between two of the most popular lakes, Lake Okanagan which spans 100km from Vernon to Penticton and Kalamalka Lake, which during the summer months shines a brilliant shade of Caribbean Indigo. Spend your time waterskiing, wakeboarding, or simply sun tanning in the bright hot sun. Boat Rentals can be arranged by your reservation agent when booking accommodations.
Surrounded by mountains, forests and steams, Vernon is a favourite destination for campers each summer. Kekuli Bay and Fintry Park are two of the family favourites, each offering space for RVs, campers and tents. Make sure to book your spots early (April 1) as they fill up extremely fast.
Each year Vernon is home to many events and festivals. During the summer months make sure to attend the Funtastic Music Festival & Slo-Pich Tournament as well as the Dragon Boat Races and Okanagan Wine Festival. Surround by lakes and streams, Vernon has no shortage of great fishing locations to catch Rainbow, Kokanee and Lake Trout. Spend an afternoon on Okanagan or Kalamalka lakes, or take a day trip to one of the high mountain lakes such as Keefer, Echo or Sugar. There are also plenty lodges and tour operators in the area to get you setup for a great fishing experience.
Vernon has become an annual destination for many golfers. With more then 12 local courses including Predator Ridge, which hosted the Export ‘A’ Skins Game in 2000, you can golf for your entire vacation without ever seeing the same course twice. Vernon will also be the future home of "The Rise" a Fred Couples signature golf course. Make sure to book your tee times early, as courses can be booked solid for weeks at a time in the summer months.
The Okanagan Valley provides a never ending supply of hiking trails. Some of the more popular trails include BX Falls & BX Creek which offers 2.2 km with some stairs and steep sections, Kalamalka Provincial Park which has cliff top trails and several excellent swimming beaches along the way and also Silver Star Mountain Resort which offers chairlift rides to the summit followed by an enjoyable hike down.
With several ranches within a few minutes drive of town, you and your family can experience the beautiful Okanagan scenery on horseback. Some of the ranches also offer pony rides for children and winter sleigh rides. Ask your reservation agent for more details.
Downtown Vernon is a hub of activity during the summer months. Stop in at any of the local restaurants, pubs or nightclubs and you are sure to be entertained.
Beautiful parks and beaches are the main reason so many people return to Vernon year after year. Children love the large water play area in Polson Park, Vernon's oldest recreational area, while Kalamalka Beach makes the perfect place to spend a hot summer day with volleyball courts, change rooms and boat rentals nearby. Another must see attraction is Kin Beach, which features a sandy beach, picnic areas with BBQ's as well as a large outdoor playground for the children.
Both Polson Place and Village Green Malls provide a nice air-conditioned break from the summer heat. All your favourite stores are here plus plenty of local shops throughout the downtown core. Discover unique local artists and products such as homemade jams, chocolate, crafts and pottery.
